Care of your Encaustic Painting
Your encaustic artwork should last a lifetime given the fantastic durable qualities of bees wax! The painting will not fade or discolour but it will need a bit of care over the years. Don’t hang your painting in direct sunlight or near a fire, heater or stove. The wax will not melt but the heat may make the surface slightly unstable. Never leave the artwork in a hot car or leave in freezing conditions. Encaustic paintings do not need to be protected by varnishes or be framed under glass.
When handling the piece, be careful not to nick or chip it with fingernails. Do not drop the artwork or bump it hard, it may crack. Encaustic paintings take several months to “cure” properly and may reveal a slight dull haze from time to time. Given that some of my paintings are meant to remain matt and “unshiny”, sheen may be recovered and fingerprints removed by buffing the artwork with your hand or a lint-free cloth (an old nylon stocking works well!)
I hope you enjoy your Encaustic Painting! If you have any questions please contact me.
